Vicar’s Greeting

May I begin by saying what a great joy and privilege to have been installed on 13th November as Priest-in-charge of the parishes of Ampleforth, Oswaldkirk, Gilling East and Stonegrave. The service was all the more beautiful as many of you have already got to know me, my wife Gillian, and our sons George and Jono as I have been taking services throughout the summer, September and October. The communities have been so very kind and generous to us, and we are so grateful for all your gifts and support.

We have now settled into the wonderful Vicarage at Ampleforth and I am very excited about beginning my time of ministry among you as we approach Christmas.

After a period of settling in up to Christmas my priorities will be:-

To negotiate with the churches how I can increase the number of services in each parish.

To commence pastoral visiting to those who are aged and infirm not only for those who have a religious faith but to anyone who is alone or families in need of pastoral support.

In collaboration with our friends from the Roman Catholic churches and the College, seek to promote the care and love of Jesus Christ in our communities, for example the schools and youth groups.

To be a visible ‘presence’ around the communities to support local activities and events.

As a ‘bank hospital chaplain’ to personally visit or arrange support in York or Scarborough hospitals for any of our people who are admitted for treatment.

Having worked for the last six years as a hospital chaplain at the Hull hospitals and in the Hull and East Riding community I have come to realise in so many ways the value of pastoral care, especially for those who are terminally ill. My invitation to you all therefore is to please contact me if you or anyone you know would value a visit, for any reason.

The Bible verse which was my motivation in my work as a chaplain was from Isaiah 40, “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.” It is my hope as your Parish priest to fulfil that in my ministry to you.

Every peace and blessing to you all.
